FOB

I've gotten some great anonymous comments over the years; I still get about one per month. Thus, it is with great sadness I inform you that I am shutting off anonymous comments, at least for now…

I've been experiencing an increasing amount of comment spam on FOB lately—enough that's it's getting to be a pain to moderate. I just tweaked CAPTCHAs to be a little harder (sadly) and upgraded Drupal's CAPTCHA package to the latest version, which apparently resists certain attacks. Hopefully that will fix the problem. If not, I'm going to have to figure out something else, and I'm afraid it's not going to be pretty. Sorry for the inconvenience. 

I put the FOB theme back on this Drupal 6 installation. It turns out that it is now straightforward to make it a Chameleon subtheme, so there's no more copy-and-hack; should make Drupal 7 a lot easier.

In the retheming process, with the aid of Firebug and some good Drupal info from the interwebs, I improved some things that had been bugging me.

I finally pulled the trigger on upgrading FOB from Drupal 5 to Drupal 6.20. So far, most everything seems good, but please let me know if you see issues. I've finally brought the FOB theme back, but now with more yellow.

I've softened the image CAPTCHAs yet again in response to a complaint. They're now pretty well-tuned as near as I can tell. Complaints are still welcome, especially with detailed problem reports.

I wish I didn't have to use these things, but they've cut the spam substantially so here I am.

For some kinds of content I want to post at FOB, a blog entry seems inappropriate. In particular, this seems true for content that is intended to be long-lived and evolving reference material. I don't like to backpatch my blog entries, and so the process for updating stuff is a little complicated.

Thus, I've created an area on FOB, http://fob.po8.org/docs for pages that are not really just blog entries. You can access it from "pages" on the link menu at the top of the screen. Enjoy.

So I was looking at the FOB homepage this evening and noticed that the first sentence there had a missing space. On looking at the revision history, it turns out that I typoed that in April 2008, over 2.5 years ago.

I guess nobody reads this site, including me.

An anonymous commenter just pointed out to me that image CAPTCHAs were broken on here again. I fixed it.

Those who have my email address handy, please send me email anytime you are struggling with the CAPTCHAs. They seem to be necessary to cut the amount of spam I have to moderate, but they sure are fragile.

I got little response to my poll, perhaps because of bugs, but more likely because nobody reads this thing. What response I did get was not terribly positive about the switch to the new Garland-based theme. So I put the "original" one back.

Of course, no sooner did I upgrade to Drupal 5.3 than 5.4 and 5.5 immediately came out. I stalled around a while, but I've finally got my sites updated. Running Debian's Drupal bits really did help.
