Time Flies

I don't know where the day went. I went to OSCON today to help out at the PSAS display, I was somewhat nervous since there was mostly a display of hardware of whose language I'm not fluent in. It was a good learning experience and I'm pretty sure I convinced several people to come to next week's Introductory PSAS meeting. I chatted with Ian a bit, I think it would nice at some point for me to learn about hardware. My extent of doing hardware was at the first little startup I worked for in Silicon Valley which went public a little over a year and a half ago and now supplies map info to mapquest. I learned how to solder and desolder from a colleague (even though I was doing software), and managed enough to fix my old beat up VCR (swapped the switches). I do like figuring out what part of devices don't work, taking them apart (carefully, theres always a trick), ordering replacement parts and successfully fixing them (been able to do that with a number of things, quite proud of myself actually that I can repair stuff on my own). Its quite cute too that my youngest daughter likes to do the same; she's quick to jump at fixing things when they break and seems to have a natural ability and desire to "figure it out".

PSU OSS Course Mentoring For Google "Summer of Code"

The registration period is over, and my PSU OSS class is the sole US University mentorship organization in Google's Summer of Code program. (A group at Universita Politecnica delle Marche in Ancona Italy is the only other University participant.) I think this is pretty cool. Check out our site at http://summer.cs.pdx.edu for more info.

Congratulations to Mark Heller

Congratulations to Mark Heller on successfully passing his Master's Thesis oral defense! His thesis, entitled "Virtual World Development With Ontologies", is available on his thesis wiki.

Our apologies for not issuing an invitation to the defense. It got rescheduled, and there was insufficient time to notify folks.

Reminder: Sigma Xi Posters needed soon for printing

Just a reminder that the poster session Apr. 21 is quickly approaching. Please keep in mind the following dates (I have pushed the dates out as I'm sending this a little late): April 8th (Fri) - Final copy poster due for printing April 18th - Presentation test runs (meet Mon evening?) April 21st - Dday for our presentations (setup at 11am) I would like to plan to have digital pics taken for us to share and put on Bart's site if you all don't have objections to it. + This is a general poster session for all scientists(biology, chemistry....) not just computer scientists.

Poster macros

The posterform macros, attached, are LaTeX macros for easy creation of large-format posters. They're a mess at present---this is definitely an alpha release.
