We are holding a Linux Plumbers Conference [excuse the broken hyphenation] here in Portland a little less than a year from today. It should be a really nice event…
There isn't much else in the way of Linux and open source general technical conference in the US anymore. Usenix Annual Technical Conference has some Linux content, but since they cancelled the Freenix track, not so much. OSCON has some technical content, but usually fairly external-facing. GOSCON is not a technical event. There are a number of trade show plays like LWE, and a number of local user-group events. Ottawa, Europe, Brazil and Australia all have events. However, we're not aware of any broad-based technical open source event in the US. Also, we're not aware of any event anywhere that is really focused on technical connection between open source developer communities.
Of course, one reason that the US is so short on such things is that it is difficult and dangerous for technologists, even academically-credentialed ones, to travel into our country. Our regulations, policies and procedures may be lousy at keeping out unwanted extra-nationals, but at least they're an effective screen for the ones we really should be welcoming in. There are certain well-known personalities who will almost certainly avoid our conference for this reason; shame on our government for putting us in this position. (B)
