FOLLOWUP: On Moonie sushi

Howard Tayler had one more comment to make in our recent conversation regarding Moonie sushi. I'll let it speak for itself…

PO8, you know, the more I think about this, the more I think we SHOULD be supporting Moon’s capitalist venture. Why? Because the more successful it becomes, the more likely it is that it will be forced to spin off into something independent; if not before Moon dies, then almost certainly afterward.

If their religion has anything to it besides a charismatic and brilliant leader (and you have to admit, the man’s brilliant if he put together a sushi empire), then maybe it’ll survive his eventual passing and the inevitable factioning that follows. If not, well… the fact that there’s a billion-dollar business in the wings leads me to believe that the “church” will likely end up as just another really successful business.

The more I disagree with Moon’s teachings (for starters, you’re not a Jesus replacement, mister Moon) the more I want to see his capitalist endeavor succeed. Corporations develop personalities and agendas of their own. The bigger it gets, the more likely TWS’s agenda (make money providing fresh seafood at good prices) will supplant the agenda Moon has for it (fund religion by making money providing fresh seafood at good prices.)

Moon may be brilliant, but he’s also deluded himself into thinking his corporation won’t outlive him. I suspect that future generations will revere Moon as “the father of mass-market sushi,” overlooking the footnote that he also founded a religion. I’m fine with that, and at my next opportunity I’ll be putting money towards making it happen.
