From Twists, Slugs and Roscoes: A Glossary of Hardboiled Slang
Why get in a car when you can hop in a boiler? Why tell someone to shut up when you can tell them to close their head? Why threaten to
discharge a firearm when you can say, "Dust, pal, or I pump lead!"

Nice
The cool thing about the best noir writers of the original era is that they used this rich slang in a way that blended it seamlessly with perfectly-chosen, almost Shakespearean English. The result is a surreal mixture that has more in common with pulp horror writing than pulp detective writing.
"I've found that there are only two kinds that are any good: slang that has established itself in the language, and slang that you make up yourself. Everything else is apt to be passé before it gets into print." —Raymond Chandler
